Klipkraal Hiking Trails

Klipkraal Farm offers two scenic hiking trails that showcase the beauty, wildlife, and history of the Suikerbosrand hills. Both trails are self-guided, and maps are provided. Hikers can enjoy panoramic views, indigenous flora, birdlife, and scenic farm landscapes.

Panorama Trail | 14 km

Day 1:

The trail begins at the camp, crossing the Blesbuck Plain within the cattle camp. From here, hikers ascend a koppie and follow the ridge through several clumps of indigenous trees. At this stage, Kiepersol Cottage, hidden among the trees, comes into view.

The trail descends briefly to a jeep track and ascends the next koppie, where the birdlife is particularly noticeable. After passing through the game fence, the trail traverses the grasslands to the area where three camps converge. It continues across the plains and climbs Letsa (Rhebok) Hill, offering the first glimpse of the Vaal Dam — a stunning sight on a sunny day as it reflects like a mirror dotted with sailboats.

Descending from Letsa, hikers enjoy a shaded walk along sweet thorn trees (Acacia Karoo), cross the dam wall (ideal for a short swim), and climb steeply to Uitkyk (1680 m) for a 360-degree view of the area. The trail descends through indigenous bushes, past the dam, and climbs Mmamolongwane (Secretary bird) Hill, providing spectacular views of the Vaal Dam, valley, and farmland.

After a short walk, hikers reach the dam to observe waterbird life. The trail continues up Panorama Hill, crossing interesting rock formations, and at the Panorama sign, offers breathtaking views over the surrounding area.
From here, the trail passes Sam’s dam and windpump, crosses easy terrain, and ascends a koppie covered with indigenous trees before joining the Kraal Trail. Hikers staying at Habitat follow a detour through the Botanical Garden, an old cattle kraal with a variety of trees marked with national identification tags. The trail concludes with a shaded walk under trees, across the Springbokvlakte, back to Habitat Camp.

Kraal Trail | 11 km

Day 2:

Starting from Habitat, the trail crosses the dam wall and vlei, continuing along the grassland headlands. The path passes under wattle trees, stretches across open veld where guinea fowl roam, and ascends a hill crossing a jeep track and a Transvaal Bluebush, eventually traversing the Thaba Nyane (Small Hill). This hill features numerous kraals, small gardens of indigenous flora, and flowering shrubs.

For those with limited time, a shortcut connects to Steenbok, providing views of the neat farmworker cottages, which are provided with free housing, wood, and electricity.

The trail includes a detour following the RED markers to the Groot Klip, a large boulder revered as a sacred place by local Christian farmworkers. For the last 50 years, prayers for rain have been held here during droughts. Visitors are asked to treat this site with respect and not disturb anything.

Continuing along the jeep track, the trail passes two marsh areas and climbs Skyfkop, historically used for target shooting by local farmers and the Heidelberg Commando (established before 1852). At the top, a shady Blue Ghwarrie grove provides a picnic spot before exploring nearby Klipkraal ruins, originally built during the Late Iron Age (1600–1700) by the Ghoya tribe, ancestors of the Basotho people. The trail passes several Kiepersol trees and marsh areas to reach the 5 km long stone wall, once used as a farm boundary.

The trail leaves the wall and ascends Noko (Porcupine) Hill, the highest point on this trail. The climb follows the contour lines, allowing hikers to enjoy changes in flora. At the small kraal near the summit, the trail follows the ridge to the Noko sign, offering panoramic views of the Vaal Dam before descending behind the hills, crossing a fence, and following the jeep track downhill. The trail then rejoins the Panorama Trail and returns to the basecamp.

Trail Notes:

  • Trails traverse a mix of grasslands, hills, valleys, dams, and forested areas
  • Birdlife: over 100 species recorded, checklists available
