Lesoba Hiking Trail

Our motto: Hike more, worry less…

Lesoba Hiking Trail is situated in the Eastern Free State between Fouriesburg and Clarens. 350km from Johannesburg and 280 km from Bloemfontein .Lesoba Hiking Trail offers a tranquil, revitalising getaway, ideal for hikers as well As nature and outdoor enthusiasts.

The accommodation consists of four self catering sandstone chalets, a cottage and two flat-lets/units. We also offer six single beds as basic accommodation for backpackers or hikers. All the CHALETS ARE situated next to a dam with panoramic views.

On site facilities include two hiking trails 14 km (approx 6 hours) and 9 km (approx 4 hours) with views of Lesotho, the Caledon river, Clarens and Fouriesburg districts. Along the way you will come across the Queen Victoria rock formation, Bushman paintings and a Dinosaurs femur embedded in rock.

Lesoba also boasts Blesbuck , rock rabbits and an array of bird species. Magnificent stargazing at night

The first kilometre consists of a steep climb up through a rock-strewn cleft in the rocks, which leads to the top of the mountain. From here a detour of another kilometre takes you along a spur to a magnificent viewpoint that looks out across the Caledon River to the mountains of Lesotho beyond. Retreat back along the spur and then ascend to the flat mountain top to enjoy an easy walk of about five kilometres and some beautiful views of the surrounding area.

The descent from the mountain is probably even steeper than the ascent, so take care as you scramble down a path of loose rock for about 300 metres.

Near the base of the mountain, the trail veers off to the right and follows the base of the krans for a short distance until you reach a large overhang. This is a good place to take a rest as most of the remainder of the trail is in the open. From here, the path descends to a stream, which is often dry, and then a short climb takes you to the foot of Queen Victoria. This is a rock outcrop that has an uncanny resemblance to the seated monarch and is a well-known landmark of the area. An easy 2,5-kilometre walk completes the trail.

The second trail of seven kilometers is also available at Lesoba. This trail is even steeper than the first but the views from the top make it worthwhile. Both trails must be booked in advance and require an overnight stay.
