Trails
Hiking trails – 5.6km, 6.3km and 7.6km
There really is a trail for everyone…
Yellow Route – Easy
Brown Route – Moderate
Blue Route – Extreme
Yellow Route
The yellow route that is very well marked with yellow footprints starts off at the lodge where it will wind you through beautiful escarpments of different walking terrains that the farm boasts. There are a several semi steep inclines that takes you through beautiful shaded spots where you will see the cosmic Aloes growing all over, also look out for the educational boards that’s been added. You will encounter a Historical Tea House that was used as a resting spot in the Voortrekker era where they would stop and enjoy a spot of tea.
The route meanders down to the Elands River, which is famous for its yellow fish, which runs through the farm, here you will find some stunning areas all along the route, where you can sit and enjoy the vast sound of birds and the flowing Elands River, while taking some photos in our nature photo booth. The route strolls pretty far along the Elands River where you will see the little town of Waterval Onder where President Paul Kruger lived before he left South Africa via Mozambique during the Anglo-Boer war. His Krugerhof House was proclaimed a national monument.
The route continues over the main road into a beautiful bush scene where you will eventually reach the old steel bridge, here, the more adventurous hiker can hike up to the bridge and enjoy the beautiful scenery. From here you will retrace your steps back to the main road and hike a few meters back into the bush up the foothill where stunning views of the mountains can be enjoyed.
The trail turns upwards taking you to the train tracks and over it, if you are lucky, you can experience the train going past, this railway was built between Pretoria and Delagoa Bay, and the Nederlandsche Zuid Afrikaansche Spoorweg, the Dutch rail company, who established a railway supply depot here in 1895. A section of the rack rail, which was used to pull the locomotive and carriages up the steep gradient, can still be seen and heard on the farm.
After crossing the train tracks, you will hike our Horseshoe loop and here again you can experience the train as it goes around the Horseshoe loop, which will take you through winding Lowveld bush and through a tunnel before descending back towards the lodge.
